VCON Products Chosen by Italian Government for Videoconferencing Contract

VCON's desktop videoconferencing and network infrastructure products chosen by Italian government agency, Consip

(February 9, 2004) Austin, Texas – VCON (Nouveau Marché No. 022021), a worldwide leader in audio and videoconferencing solutions, today announced that its desktop and infrastructure videoconferencing products were chosen by Consip as part of a 16M Euro videoconferencing tender. Consip is wholly owned by the Italian government and provides consultancy, assistance and IT solutions aimed at the innovation of the Public Administration. Consip’s purchasing vehicle is used by all Italian governmental agencies.

VCON products were offered by Cofax, a VCON partner and member of the joint venture that won the tender. The winning joint venture was headed up by Albacom. The products proposed by Cofax included desktop and settop videoconferencing systems, multipoint conferencing units, videoconferencing gatekeepers and infrastructure solutions along with service contracts for the equipment. Points were awarded to each of the bidding resellers based on pricing and technical points. The winning joint venture scored very high on technical points, in partly due to the features and abilities of the VCON The Media Xchange Manager®, which was offered as both a gatekeeper and as the videoconferencing infrastructure solution.

A unique feature the VCON solution that gained a very high technical score is VCON’s Interactive Multicast technology. Interactive Multicast enables Italian governmental agencies to use bandwidth efficient multicast streaming, while still maintaining the interaction levels of traditional multipoint conferencing. Conserving bandwidth, while still being able to participate interactively at high data rates was very attractive to Consip.

“VCON is very excited to be part of this project set forth by the Italian government,” said Andreas Wienold, senior VP, global sales. “We are confident that our videoconferencing infrastructure and desktop products will be well received by the various Italian agencies that purchase from this contract. It is always exciting to see a government embrace technology aimed at improving the effectiveness of communication between its agencies.”

Consip has approved the price list proposed by the joint venture for each of the items in the tender. The price list has been posted for agencies to begin their purchasing. To date, at least five Italian government agencies have made purchases based on the contract.
